Save on your Car insurance

Choosing the right car insurance can be a bit of a minefield. They all sound good at first glance but then you read the small print and discover that certain things aren’t included. We all want a policy that suits our individual needs, whether we are young or old, male or female, so it’s worth hunting around to find a policy that suits you.

However, car insurance is a pretty competitive market and it’s often hard to distinguish between the myriad policies, so look out for special deals, offers and sweeteners as these little extras will ultimately save you money.

Kwik Fit Insurance, for example, has some great extras included in its car insurance. Currently, it is including a Time Traveller 1000 Sat Nav with all of its new policies for just £29.99. This particular model normally costs more than twice this amount.

Another thing to look out for is online discount. There are some things that you wouldn’t want to buy online, but car insurance is pretty easy to sort out on the web. You can save anything from 10-30% by leaving the phone alone and getting on the computer. Most price comparison websites also let you click straight through to the insurer’s site once you have found a policy that suits you, so it’s actually a lot more straightforward online than on the phone.

Many companies also offer specific cover depending on who you are. There are now numerous companies that offer car insurance designed for women. Women have less serious accidents than their male counterparts and this feeds through to lower premiums, some times as much as 30% cheaper. Apart from the usual benefits like courtesy cars they also offer ‘handbag cover’ in case your bag is in the car when it’s stolen.

The over 50s are also considered to be safer drivers and this means lower premiums and excesses. Plus the added extras are tailored to the needs of older people. For example, you can get ‘any driver’ emergency cover so that anyone with a full UK license can drive the car in a medical or motoring emergency.

There are also personal factors that affect the price of your car insurance. This can be anything from where you live to the car you drive. City living is seen as more dangerous, so insuring your car in say London, will cost more than it would in Newquay. Likewise, if you drive a new, energy efficient car with high levels of security your annual costs will be less than if you are driving an old, petrol guzzler without central locking.

While some things you can’t realistically change; you can’t just move to the countryside to save a few hundred quid on your car insurance, you can however fit your car with a catalytic converter and an immobiliser.
